Q: How do I store BACK TO NATURE products to best keep them fresh?

A: For all BACK TO NATURE products (except for pickles), we recommend that they are stored in a cool, dry place. BACK TO NATURE PICKLES should be refrigerated. For our bags of granola, make sure to keep the resealable closure tightly shut. Keeping the item in a warm area (such as on top of a refrigerator) will decrease the amount of time it will remain fresh.

Q: How can I tell which BACK TO NATURE products are certified organic, and how are they certified?

A: BACK TO NATURE products that are certified organic will either carry the USDA organic seal or state that it is made with organic ingredient on the front panel. It will also state in the ingredient line that it is certified organic by USDA-approved Quality Certification Services, Inc. Our Macaroni and Cheese dinners will state that the cheese sauce is organic; and the cheese pouch will be labeled with the USDA organic seal. In addition, we use organic ingredients in several of our items, though the entire product may not be organic. Any ingredients listed in our ingredients list as organic, comply fully with the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) standards. Our current certified organic products are: Organic Stoneground Wheat Crackers, Organic Saltines, and Organic Shells 'N Cheese Dinner. Quality Certification Services, Inc. is an accredited certifier per the USDA National Organic Program. For more information on this company, please visit their website CLICK HERE

Q: BACK TO NATURE Cheese Sauce Mixes are labeled as certified organic. What does this mean, especially pertaining to the use of enzymes and rennet, growth hormones, and the treatment of your cows?

A: We have a large selection of macaroni & cheese dinners to meet our consumers' needs, including three that are certified Organic. If you are looking for Organic dinners, look for the USDA Organic seal on the package. This means they comply fully with the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) standards and are certified organic by Quality Certification Services (QCS).

To be certified Organic, all of the ingredients must meet National Organic Program requirements, including

  • Rennet and enzymes that are from non-animal sources
  • Organic milk that is sourced from cows that are not treated with rBGH growth hormone, other added hormones or antibiotics
  • Organic milk that is sourced from cows that have been raised within USDA NOP livestock handling and feeding requirements

Finally, our Organic ingredient suppliers must also be certified against Organic requirements.

Q: How do I read the Best When Used By date on BACK TO NATURE products?

A: Here's how to interpret the Best When Used By date on BACK TO NATURE products. An example is provided below:

  • 04OCT2005 BD 12
  • 04= Day of month of expiration
  • OCT= Month

Q: Do you have a list of BACK TO NATURE products that are gluten-free?

A: We understand how important it is for people with gluten sensitivity to have accurate information about the gluten content of foods. To make sure our consumers have the best source of information, gluten-containing ingredients are always listed on our ingredient label, no matter how small the amount. We list ingredients that are a source of gluten on our label's ingredient statement in commonly known terms, such as wheat, barley, oats or rye. For other gluten-containing ingredients, the grain source is declared in parentheses after the ingredient name. For example, if a natural flavor ingredient contains a gluten source that is not otherwise declared on the ingredient statement, the label would read: natural flavor (contains rye). Examples of other grains that contain gluten are triticale, spelt, kamut, mir and farina and, if included in our products, they are labeled. While the majority of Back to Nature products DO contain gluten (as listed on our ingredient lines), we also offer a line of Rice Thins crackers (White Cheddar, Sesame Ginger, and Tomato Herb) that are not currently manufactured with gluten in our recipe. However, as formulas change, we always recommend that you read the ingredient lines before you purchase.
